A Warwickshire parent is calling for greater understanding of developmental language disorder ahead of an international awareness day this Friday.

The Leamington Spa contributor hopes to connect with other families, encourage schools to learn more about DLD and help parents feel less isolated when looking for support.

In her account submitted to Local Gazette, she describes how difficult it can feel to seek information about a condition which people around a family may know little about.

She hopes sharing experiences, raising awareness on social media and working with campaigning organisations will help bring the subject into schools and communities.

The international awareness organisation RADLD describes DLD as causing difficulties with understanding and using language. Its DLD Awareness Day takes place on Friday 16 October 2026, with the theme Together for DLD.

The contributor wants people to recognise that language difficulties may not be obvious, and that patience and understanding can make a difference to everyday interactions.

Her appeal focuses on awareness and support for families.
